Every Dragon Ball Saga Ranked from Worst to Best
Forty years of Dragon Ball means a lot of arcs, sagas, and storylines - and not all of them are equal. Some are franchise-defining. Some are forgettable filler. And some are *Dragon Ball GT*. Here's every major saga ranked, worst to best, by writing, animation, character work, and emotional payoff.
This list focuses on canon arcs (manga or anime), with a few notable side entries. We're not ranking every minor mini-arc - these are the arcs most fans actually argue about.
## 18. Garlic Jr. Saga (Anime Filler)
Anime-only filler that has aged badly. Garlic Jr. as a villain is uninteresting, the Black Water Mist subplot was repetitive, and the saga exists primarily to fill time between Frieza and Cell. The only redeeming moments are some Krillin and Gohan dialogue beats. Skippable.
## 17. Dragon Ball GT (Entire Series)
GT is divisive, and most of the divide comes down to: was it really Dragon Ball? Some moments work - Goku going SS4 against Baby is iconic. Most of the series is a power-creep mess with weak villains and inconsistent character writing. Most fans now consider GT non-canon.
## 16. Future Trunks Saga (Super)
The premise was excellent. The execution was rushed. Goku Black and Zamasu had real menace, but the resolution (Zeno erasing the timeline) felt like a writing room giving up. Animation quality dipped during key fights. The saga ranks low because it had so much potential and underdelivered.
## 15. Universe Survival / Tournament of Power (Super)
Massive setpiece arc. Strong moments throughout. But over 50 episodes, the roster is too large, side characters get token screen time, and the tournament structure feels artificial. Goku unlocking Mastered UI in the final fight is one of the franchise's best moments - but the saga around it is uneven.
## 14. Dragon Ball Daima (2024)
Lighter, more whimsical, and intentionally not a power-fantasy. *Daima* succeeded at what it set out to do, but it's not most fans' preferred Dragon Ball flavor. Lore additions (Demon Realm, Glind) are valuable. Combat is mostly forgettable.
## 13. Saiyan Saga (Original DBZ)
The arc that introduced Vegeta and Nappa. Foundational for everything that came after. Animation has aged but the storytelling holds up. Goku's Spirit Bomb against Vegeta is one of the best fights in the series. Drops on the list because shorter sagas with less narrative depth tend to.
## 12. Universe 6 / Champa Saga (Super)
Underrated arc. The introduction of Champa, Vados, and the broader multiverse expanded the franchise meaningfully. Goku vs Hit is an excellent fight. The tournament structure works better here than in the larger Tournament of Power. A solid B+ saga.
## 11. Granolah Survivor Saga (Manga)
Toyotaro at his strongest. The Granolah arc introduced new lore (Cerealian wishes), gave Vegeta his Ultra Ego form, and developed Frieza's threat in unexpected directions. Black Frieza's reveal at the end is one of the best cliffhangers in the franchise. Anime adaptation pending.
## 10. Black Frieza Arc (Manga, Ongoing)
Currently unfolding in the manga. Ranks high based on what we've seen - Black Frieza as the strongest mortal in canon is a genuinely fresh threat. The full arc will likely move up or down this list depending on resolution.
## 9. Resurrection F (Movie + Super Adaptation)
Frieza's revival is treated with the weight it deserves. The Golden Frieza form was visually striking. Goku and Vegeta's joint approach to the threat sets up the rest of *Super*. Animation quality (movie version) is exceptional.
## 8. Battle of Gods (Movie + Super Adaptation)
The film that revived the franchise. Beerus is one of the best new villains DBZ has introduced in decades. The fight between Beerus and SSG Goku is genuinely beautiful. The *Super* adaptation softened some of the impact, but the core remains excellent.
## 7. Saiyaman Saga (DBZ)
Often dismissed as filler between Cell and Buu. Underrated. Gohan as a high schooler dealing with normal problems is some of the franchise's most charming character work. Yes, the Great Saiyaman costume is silly. That's the point.
## 6. Super Hero (Movie)
Gave us Beast Gohan, Orange Piccolo, and the franchise's best animation since *Resurrection F*. Tight pacing, strong character moments, and a self-contained story that doesn't require homework. Best modern Dragon Ball entry.
## 5. Buu Saga (DBZ)
Long but consistently strong. Mr. Satan's character development, Vegeta's sacrifice, the Spirit Bomb finale, Buu's various forms - there's a lot to love. Some dragging in the middle, but the climactic fight is among the franchise's most emotional.
## 4. Frieza Saga (DBZ)
The arc that made Dragon Ball international. Goku turning Super Saiyan is the single most replayed moment in shonen anime. Frieza remains one of the best antagonists in the franchise. The fight on Namek is iconic.
## 3. Cell Saga (DBZ)
The pinnacle of DBZ structurally. The Cell Games tournament, Gohan's transformation in front of his father, Vegeta's redemption arc, and one of the most satisfying climaxes in the entire series. Perfect Cell as a villain holds up beautifully.
## 2. Original Dragon Ball (Series)
Pre-Z Dragon Ball is wildly different from what most modern fans grew up with - and it's *better* than people remember. Adventure-driven, character-focused, deeply funny. Toriyama's writing is at its loosest and most creative. Often skipped by modern fans, which is a mistake.
## 1. Frieza Saga + Cell Saga (Combined Era of DBZ)
The 1989-1995 stretch of *Dragon Ball Z* - covering the Saiyan, Frieza, Cell, and Buu sagas in succession - is the franchise at its peak. Each saga builds on the last, character arcs pay off, the animation quality consistently improved, and the storytelling discipline was tight.
If you're new to Dragon Ball: start at the original series, then watch DBZ Kai through the Cell Saga. That's the platonic ideal of the franchise.
## Final Verdict
Dragon Ball's best work is concentrated in DBZ's middle stretch, but the modern era has produced enough strong entries (*Super Hero*, *Battle of Gods*, the Granolah arc) to keep the franchise relevant. *Beerus* (Fall 2026) will reshape this list when it lands.
Until then: rewatch the Cell Saga. It still holds up.
