With Sparking! ZERO dropping in 2024 with 182+ characters and the Budokai Tenkaichi legacy behind it, I think it's time to settle this.
Here's my top 5 Dragon Ball games of all time:
1. Budokai Tenkaichi 2 — 135+ characters, best story mode in the series, and the gameplay was perfectly balanced between accessible and deep. This is the gold standard.
2. Dragon Ball FighterZ — The competitive scene was incredible. 2D fighting perfection with Arc System Works animation. Hikari and INZEM at EVO were legendary.
3. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot — Best single-player DBZ experience. Flying around as Goku in an open world, reliving the sagas with RPG mechanics? Yes please. The DLC covering Goku vs Uub was a nice surprise.
4. Sparking! ZERO — 182 characters, insane graphics, team battles. It's basically Tenkaichi evolved. The only reason it's not #1 is nostalgia bias for BT2.
5. Legacy of Goku 2 + Buu's Fury — If you had a GBA, these were your life. The sprite work, the RPG elements, playing as different Z Fighters. Spiritual predecessor to Kakarot.
Honorable mention: Xenoverse 2 for the CaC system and the modding community keeping it alive in 2026.
What's YOUR top Dragon Ball game? And is anyone else hyped for AGE 1000 in 2027? Toriyama created a whole new world and characters for it before he passed. That's going to be special.
