On August 27, V Jump's official account described Toyotarou as "currently serializing Dragon Ball Super in V Jump," and within a day the headlines had escalated from "teases" to "officially confirms manga return." If you have been waiting since March 2024, you would be forgiven for getting excited. We got excited. Then we went and read everything, and the honest picture is more interesting and less settled than the headlines.
Here is what was actually said, the full timeline of the hiatus, exactly where the story stopped, and the two dates on the calendar where a Chapter 105 could realistically appear.
What V Jump Actually Said on August 27 (and What It Did Not)
The post says Toyotarou is currently serializing Dragon Ball Super in V Jump. That is the whole claim. No chapter number, no issue, no arc, no date. CBR, which broke the story in English, noted in its own article that V Jump "provided no release date for Chapter 105."
The part most coverage skipped: that exact phrase is standing boilerplate. The official Dragon Ball site's monthly "Toyotarou Tried to Draw" feature has opened with "Toyotarou, who is currently serializing Dragon Ball Super in V-Jump" all year, including in January, and the August 27 installment (Super Mr. Satan, if you are curious) calls the manga "V Jump's ongoing series." Shueisha has never listed the series as cancelled or concluded; it has been "on break" in every issue's fine print since spring 2024. Kanzenshuu, the most careful source on this, noted as recently as August 17 that the small splashes in V Jump each month still say it is off the following issue.
Our best read of why the post went out that day: the October 2026 issue of V Jump, on sale August 21, includes a Gundam Card Game bonus card of Domon Kasshu drawn by Toyotarou, and V Jump was promoting its artist. The "serializing" line came along for the ride. That does not make a return less likely. It just means August 27 was not an announcement.
The 29-Month Hiatus, in Order
March 1, 2024. Akira Toriyama passes away at 68. Bird Studio announces it on March 8.
March 20, 2024. Chapter 103, "A Legacy Toward the Future," publishes in the May 2024 issue of V Jump. It is the first chapter to release after his death and the last chapter he corrected: Toyotarou later shared that Toriyama's final note was to have Piccolo turn and wave goodbye to Pan's kindergarten teacher instead of everyone flying off with their backs turned. The final page carries the line "We will take a break starting next issue." MANGA Plus initially listed a July 2024 return; Shueisha quietly removed the date, and the break became indefinite.
March 29, 2024. Toyotarou, on X: "So Dragon Ball Super will be on hiatus for now."
April 2024 through January 2025. Nothing. Ten months without a chapter.
February 19, 2025. Chapter 104, "The Birth of Saiyaman X," publishes in the April 2025 issue. It is a standalone one-shot about Goten and Trunks inventing their masked hero identities, set before the Super Hero arc. It exists, by Kanzenshuu's reading, so that Volume 24 could be filled out to four chapters. It ends on "to be continued," and nothing has continued.
January 25, 2026. The Genkidamatsuri 40th anniversary event announces two anime projects, a Hans Zimmer-scored anniversary video, and a 2027 game. Zero manga news. We covered the event in our Beerus announcement post.
Spring 2026. Toyotarou changes his X bio to, in translation, "Everything is for the return of the series." The June 2026 V Jump still prints the on-break notice.
August 5, 2026. A father posts that his 7-year-old wants more Dragon Ball Super. Toyotarou replies "Thank you. I got it." The reply passes 6.5 million views.
August 17, 2026. The "My Favorite Cover" poll results air: Volume 19 wins, Volume 24 finishes second. Toyotarou's bonus art shows Vegeta, Bulma, Trunks, and Bulla above water with King Vegeta holding a baby Tarble in the reflection, beside a deliberately blurred woman. His comment: "I won't reveal anything but check out Bulma's reflection. That's why I can't say who - I mean, I have no idea who it is!" It is the first time Tarble has been drawn in the Super manga and, by every reasonable reading, the first glimpse of Vegeta's mother.

For context, this is not the manga's first pause. It stopped after Chapter 87 in August 2022 "to prepare for the next story arc" and came back with Chapter 88 four months later. The difference now is that 29 months have passed, and the reason for the pause is not one anyone can schedule around.
Where the Story Actually Stopped
If you drifted away during the break, the state of play is easy to lose track of, because the last canonical story beat is Chapter 103 and the most recent chapter is a prequel.
Chapter 87 (August 2022) is the reason everyone assumes the next arc is about Frieza. On Cereal, Frieza kills the decaying Gas with a single piercing blow, then kills Elec, and reveals Black Frieza: ten years of training inside a Hyperbolic Time Chamber he found on a conquered planet, ten days in the outside world. He then puts down True Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta with one gut punch each, simultaneously, and leaves with Oil and Macki added to his army. Whis, collecting the two Saiyans, hints that the Oracle Fish's "strongest in the universe" may not be Frieza after all. We wrote about why that reveal landed so hard in our Frieza piece.
Chapters 88 through 103 are the Super Hero arc: three original prologue chapters, the film adaptation (Gohan Beast awakens in Chapter 99, Orange Piccolo carries the Cell Max fight across 97 to 100), and then an original epilogue Toriyama largely wrote himself. Chapter 102 is the sparring match everyone still argues about, Goku versus Gohan. Chapter 103 is the group training on Beerus's planet, with Broly finally controlling his form against Gohan, followed by that quiet kindergarten ending. Chapter 104 is the Saiyaman X one-shot. Fun, canon, and not a continuation.
The Threads a Comeback Has to Pick Up
Whatever Chapter 105 is, it inherits a long list:
Black Frieza has been unbeaten since Chapter 87 and is the stated reason Goku and Vegeta are training on Beerus's planet. Broly is now controllable, which the story has been building toward since the movie. Gohan Beast exists and has sparred Goku to a debatable result. Orange Piccolo exists. The Red Ribbon Army is gone in name, with Carmine pivoting to pharmaceuticals in Chapter 103 and Gamma 2's sacrifice in Chapter 98 still unaddressed. Whis's remark about the strongest in the universe is an open question the story planted on purpose. And now there is Vegeta's family, which Toyotarou chose to draw, unprompted, in the one piece of new art he has released this year.
The fan consensus, and the consensus at outlets like CBR, is that the next arc is the Black Frieza arc. We agree that it is the most likely, and we would note that Toyotarou's poll art is the first concrete hint that a Vegeta-centered story is on his mind. Both can be true.
When Chapter 105 Could Actually Land
Dragon Ball Super has always run monthly in V Jump, with the official English releasing the same day on MANGA Plus and Viz's Shonen Jump app. V Jump issues ship around the 21st of the month, two months ahead of their cover date. The October 2026 issue is already out (August 21). So the realistic slots this fall are:
The November 2026 issue, on sale around September 19 to 21. September 21 is a Japanese public holiday, so it may ship a day or two early. This is the earliest possible Chapter 105 and, if V Jump were planning it, we would expect a formal announcement before then rather than a boilerplate tweet.
The December 2026 issue, on sale around October 21. This is the one we would circle. It lines up with the New York Comic Con Dragon Ball panel on October 8, where the Dragon Ball Super: Beerus premiere date is expected to be revealed, and with the Beerus broadcast itself starting on Fuji TV in October. A manga return timed to the anime's return is exactly the kind of coordinated moment Shueisha and Toei like.
If neither issue carries it, the next natural window is Jump Festa in December, which is where the manga's original 2015 launch and most of its big beats were announced.
The Anime Side, Briefly
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, the enhanced re-cut of the Battle of Gods and Resurrection F material, is confirmed for Fuji TV this fall, with October listed and the exact date still unannounced as of late August. Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, the Moro arc adaptation and the true sequel series, was announced in January with no release window at all; "2027" is press guesswork, and Toei's August financial report lists it outside its 2026 and 2027 slates, so 2028 is on the table. What to Make of the "Leaks"
Three things are floating around and they are not equal. A spring 2026 leak of Volume 25 spine art is unofficial but plausible; if real, it implies chapters 105 through 108 exist in some form. A December 2025 leak of a V Jump cover featuring Ultra Instinct Goku and Gohan Beast never materialized. And the TikTok and Threads accounts posting "Chapter 105 leaked" panels are noise; every one we have checked was fan art or old material. Kanzenshuu has not run a single story treating any of these as real, and neither will we until a chapter has a date.
Our Read
Nothing was announced on August 27. But the signals of 2026 point one direction: an artist whose bio says everything is for the return, a monthly official feature that keeps calling the series ongoing, a publisher that has never once used the word "ended," new art that reaches back into Vegeta's family for the first time, and an anime schedule that gives Shueisha a perfect October moment to bring the manga back alongside it. Our expectation is a formal announcement between now and NYCC and a Chapter 105 in the December issue on October 21. If we are wrong, Jump Festa is the fallback.
